The 2023 vintage of the Per Fumum Endowment Fund

Researching and promoting France’s olfactory heritage: these are the missions that the Per Fumum Endowment Fund wishes to pursue in 2023-2024.

To achieve this, it has chosen to support 3 projects:

As part of its ongoing commitment to scientific research into olfaction and the sense of smell, the Per Fumum Endowment Fund is once again involved in the second phase of the Clio study with the CNRS. Led by Moustafa Bensafi (find out more about his interview here), the study will focus more on physiological and cerebral reactions to pleasant smells. Its aim is to establish links between genetic, physiological and perceptual variables, and brain activity. The aim is to gain a better understanding of how these factors influence the cerebral representation of olfactory pleasure in humans.

In October 2021, Alice Camus and Érika Wicky presented a symposium at the Château de Versailles on the place of the perfumer through the ages. The event took a multidisciplinary approach, delving into the history of the perfumer to explore his craft, social status and representations. The main aim of this research was to understand the figure of the perfumer in his historical context, highlighting the links between his activity and the socio-cultural environment of his time. The Per Fumum Endowment Fund is now helping the two researchers to publish the proceedings of this conference. This support will enable the creation of a book bringing together twelve analytical works, offering an in-depth understanding of the various aspects of the perfumer’s profession and tracing the evolution of this emblematic figure from its origins.

And finally, a research grant dedicated to the history of perfumery. This project, led by Tristan Hinschberger, a student at the École du Louvre, will seek to explain the role played by the Universal and International Exhibitions from 1889 to 1925 in the birth and development of modern perfumery.

SEPTEMBER 2023

For this new season, Héritage(s) is also continuing its development with the enrichment of 5 new portraits given by: the daughters of Paul Vacher, Max Gavarry, Michel Roudnitska, Olivier Maure and Martin Gras.

We would like to thank them once again for their contribution to our heritage.
